Triffid

Triffid (Monty Byers, 1989) is a truly singular Tall Bearded iris, standing at an impressive 38" (97 cm) and blooming from early to late season. Its luminous standards glow in soft greenish lemon cream, elegantly paired with creamy white falls highlighted by greenish gold hafts. The blue-based beard, tipped in greenish gold and often crowned with cream horns—sometimes even dramatic purple-tipped plume flounces—adds a captivating, sculptural flair. Lightly ruffled petals and a subtle sweet fragrance complete this cultivar’s refined, painterly presence. Bred from ‘Song Of Norway’ x ‘Pronghorn’ and introduced by Moonshine Gardens, Triffid is a collector-grade iris that brings a memorable, gallery-worthy statement to any garden. Available at Amethyst Creek Farm. Attributes: Fertile, Guardian Garden, Historic Guardian Garden (GG) This cultivar is a Guardian Garden Iris. Guardian Garden irises are endangered cultivars preserved through long-term stewardship rather than routine sale. Many of these varieties have been lost to time through attrition, discontinued propagation, or the disappearance of original growers, leaving only a few known living examples in cultivation. When a Guardian Garden variety is offered, it reflects that a sustainable stock level has finally been reached within our collection; availability remains intentionally limited to protect the cultivar’s future. We encourage collectors who value historic preservation to support the continued safeguarding of rare and endangered irises by joining the Historic Iris Preservation Society.
