Spellbinder

Spellbinder (Kenneth D. Smith, 1951) is a gallery-worthy tall bearded iris, celebrated for its singular reverse bicolor effect and refined garden presence. This midseason to late-blooming variety reaches an impressive 38" (97 cm), producing large, exhibition-grade blooms. The standards and undersides of the semi-flaring, ruffled falls glow with luminous naphthalene yellow, while the top surface of the falls is a pristine oyster white—creating a dramatic, high-contrast display. Green-gold lines at the haft and a green midrib on the standards intensify the interplay of lemon yellow and oyster white, all finished with a picoteed and fluted edge of bright yellow gold for a luxe touch. Each bloom measures 5-3/4" wide by 5" long, carried on robust 34" stalks with four well-spaced branches. This iris is also a Guardian Garden iris. Guardian Garden irises are historic or culturally significant irises that are actively preserved in designated Guardian Gardens to ensure their long-term survival, accurate identification, and continued propagation. These cultivars are often rare, no longer commercially available, or at risk of disappearing due to age, limited stock, or loss of provenance, so their distribution is handled with care. While they may be grown, evaluated, and documented at any time, sales are typically deferred until the variety is well-established, correctly verified, and judged stable enough that offering divisions will not compromise preservation goals; when a Guardian Garden iris is listed for sale, it indicates that we at Amethyst Creek Farm (ACF) have reached a stable and sufficient increase, with multiple healthy divisions in cultivation, allowing the cultivar to be shared responsibly while maintaining its long-term preservation. As such, availability is usually very limited. With its heritage pedigree ('Amandine' x 'Gold Ruffles'), Spellbinder is a memorable, collector-grade addition that elevates any garden with its radiant, painterly beauty. Available at Amethyst Creek Farm. Attributes: Edge Trim, Guardian Garden, Historic, Ruffled Guardian Garden (GG) This cultivar is a Guardian Garden Iris. Guardian Garden irises are endangered cultivars preserved through long-term stewardship rather than routine sale. Many of these varieties have been lost to time through attrition, discontinued propagation, or the disappearance of original growers, leaving only a few known living examples in cultivation. When a Guardian Garden variety is offered, it reflects that a sustainable stock level has finally been reached within our collection; availability remains intentionally limited to protect the cultivar’s future. We encourage collectors who value historic preservation to support the continued safeguarding of rare and endangered irises by joining the Historic Iris Preservation Society.
