Robusto

Robusto (Paul Black, 1983) is a dazzling Tall Bearded iris that radiates with gallery-worthy color and presence. Reaching an impressive 36" (91 cm), this late midseason standout features apricot standards delicately infused with peach-pink along the midrib, while the sumptuous apricot-pink falls are crowned by a vivid tangerine beard—each bloom a painterly masterpiece. With a distinguished pedigree from ‘Old Flame’ x ‘Instant Charm’ and an Honorable Mention in 1987, Robusto is a collector-grade iris for those seeking a bloom with both heritage and visual impact. Notably, Robusto is a rebloomer, with documented rebloom performance in Texas, making it a dynamic and enduring addition to the garden. This cultivar’s saturated, luminous hues and commanding stature ensure it remains a memorable centerpiece in any landscape. Guardian Garden irises are endangered cultivars preserved through long-term stewardship rather than routine sale. Many of these varieties have been lost to time through attrition, discontinued propagation, or the disappearance of original growers, leaving only a few known living examples in cultivation. When a Guardian Garden variety is offered, it reflects that a sustainable stock level has finally been reached within our collection; availability remains intentionally limited to protect the cultivar’s future. We encourage collectors who value historic preservation to support the continued safeguarding of rare and endangered irises by joining the Historic Iris Preservation Society.
