One Step Beyond (Richard Tasco, 2014) is a commanding tall bearded iris that lives up to its name with a dramatic, high-contrast color palette and bold garden presence. Reaching 34" (86 cm) in midseason, this hybridizer’s dream features oxblood to brick red standards with a light bronze midrib, luminous gold style arms, and brick red crests. The falls are a velvety jet black, accentuated by several yellow veins near the golden orange beard, which is tipped with a few purple-black hairs. Lightly ruffled petals and medium purple-based foliage add to its sculptural, exhibition-grade appeal. With a slight spicy fragrance and a pedigree from ‘Black Magic Woman’ x ‘Smoky Shadows’, One Step Beyond is a memorable, show garden quality iris that earned an Honorable Mention in 2016.
