October

October (Monty Byers, 1988) is a remarkable tall bearded iris that commands attention with its radiant, gold standards and bronzy golden brown falls, accented by a small white area at the hafts overlaid with golden brown lines. The violet beard tipped in gold and heavily ruffled petals create a painterly, sculptural effect, while the gold crests and violet-to-gold style arms add further depth and intrigue. Standing at 36" (91 cm), October blooms early midseason to midseason and offers the added delight of reblooming. A slight spicy fragrance enhances its garden presence. With its dynamic color play and captivating form, October is a collector-grade, exhibition-ready iris from the cross Well Endowed x Violet Miracle, introduced by Moonshine Gardens in 1989. Available at Amethyst Creek Farm. Attributes: Fertile, Fragrant, Guardian Garden, Historic, Rebloomer, Ruffled Rebloomer This cultivar is a known rebloomer. Guardian Garden irises are endangered cultivars preserved through long-term stewardship rather than routine sale. Many of these varieties have been lost to time through attrition, discontinued propagation, or the disappearance of original growers, leaving only a few known living examples in cultivation. When a Guardian Garden variety is offered, it reflects that a sustainable stock level has finally been reached within our collection; availability remains intentionally limited to protect the cultivar’s future. We encourage collectors who value historic preservation to support the continued safeguarding of rare and endangered irises by joining the Historic Iris Preservation Society.
