Midnight Oil

Midnight Oil (Keith Keppel, 1997) is a truly remarkable Tall Bearded iris, celebrated for its deep, saturated black self—darker than eggplant—with falls that reveal a subtle velvet sheen. Standing at 36" (91 cm) and blooming midseason, this cultivar features style arms richer than port and vivid grape beards, creating a dramatic interplay of luxurious, dark tones. A slight sweet fragrance adds a refined touch to its already captivating presence. With a distinguished pedigree and a history of accolades—including Favorite Guest (1999), Honorable Mention (2000), and Award of Merit (2002)—Midnight Oil is a gallery-worthy, field-stopping iris that brings a sense of opulence and drama to any garden. Rebloom has been reported in California (USDA Zone 9b), making it a dynamic choice for those seeking both visual impact and extended bloom. Available at Amethyst Creek Farm.
