Cherry Tart

Cherry Tart (J. Terry Aitken, 1985) is a charming Standard Dwarf Bearded iris reaching 12" (30 cm) in height, blooming midseason. Its standards display a warm grey hue with a subtle burgundy wash at the edges, while the falls are a smooth, rich burgundy red, accented by a light blue beard. Noted for its reblooming capability in USDA Zones 7 and 9 (with reports from California and Virginia), Cherry Tart brings extended color to the garden. This award-winning variety, honored with an Honorable Mention in 1988 and an Award of Merit in 1992, is available from Amethyst Creek Farm. Guardian Garden irises are endangered cultivars preserved through long-term stewardship rather than routine sale. Many of these varieties have been lost to time through attrition, discontinued propagation, or the disappearance of original growers, leaving only a few known living examples in cultivation. When a Guardian Garden variety is offered, it reflects that a sustainable stock level has finally been reached within our collection; availability remains intentionally limited to protect the cultivar’s future. We encourage collectors who value historic preservation to support the continued safeguarding of rare and endangered irises by joining the Historic Iris Preservation Society.
